A Pair of Women Busted for False Accusations of Rape
In different parts of the country this week, two women who falsely accused attackers of rape were brought to justice.
First, a woman from Castle Rock, Colorado, was sentenced to two years of probation after she pled guilty to falsely accusing a police officer of raping and beating her. Emily Peterson was ordered Monday to complete 100 hours of community service as well as pay more than $6,000 to cover the costs of the investigation. Peterson had accused that the officer had attacked her last summer during a local festival. She had also faced charges of forging and attempting to influence a public official, but those charges were dropped in exchange for entering a guilty plea for the more serious charges.
Earlier this week in Massachusetts, teenager Chelsey R. Poulin was arraigned for falsely accusing an acquaintance of raping her at knifepoint. Miss Poulin allegedly made the accusation in an official report to the police last November. The police saw through her fabrication after investigating the event and charged her with filing a false crime, intimidating a witness, and making a false statement under penalty of perjury.
According to the police report, Poulin told investigators that an acquaintance came to her apartment and forcibly raped her at knifepoint. The accused attacker, however, told officers a very different story. He claims she asked to borrow money from him, and he complied by giving her $40.00. She then requested an additional $190.00, but he said no. The two had an argument and the man left. Four days after filing the charges, Poulin admitted to the police that her acquaintance did not have a knife, did not threaten her and, in fact, had helped her pay her electric bill. It was after she was denied additional money that she violated the law and filed the false report. Her sentencing has yet to be scheduled but is to take place in the next few weeks.
